Joseph Ancil Hammans, 82, a lifelong resident of Martinsville, departed from this life on Monday, September 7th, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. at the Morgan Hospital & Medical Center.

He was born on September 26, 1926 in Martinsville, Indiana to the late Ancil Kenneth and Juanita Ozena (Freeman) Hammans.

He was a member of the Martinsville High School graduating class of 1944 and a U.S. Army veteran. He served during WWII in the 643rd Combat Engineering Division as a T-5 from May 16, 1945 until he was honorably discharged on December 17, 1946.

His memberships included the First Christian Church in Martinsville; lifetime membership to the National Rifle Association; Indiana Sheriff’s Association; Fraternal Order of Police; and a past member of the American Legion Post #230 and Loyal Order of the Moose #1257 both in Martinsville.

He worked for 25 years at American Fabrication Products in Indianapolis as a supervisor beginning in 1948 and retiring in 1973. After a couple of years of retirement, he went back to work as a supervisor for Brookside Corporation in McCordsville, Indiana from 1975-1988.

He was preceded in death by his wife of thirty years, Mary C. (Emery) Hammans on March 10, 1990. They were married on June 23, 1960.

Survivors include 2 sons, John S. Hammans of Wichita, KS and Rolly W. Hammans of Martinsville; 3 daughters, Linda Daily of Sarasota, FL, Lucretia “Lucky” Trischler of Brooklyn, IN and Betty Jo Rigney of Bronston, KY; 15 grandchildren and several great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, son, Larry Michael Hammans; grandson, Nicholas Hammans; and 2 sisters, Betty Jean Crosson and Ruth Ilene Hammans.

Family and friends are invited to visit on Thursday, September 10th from 4:00 pm – 8:00 pm at Neal & Summers Mortuary. A graveside service and entombment will follow on Friday, September 11th at 11:00 a.m. in Nebo Memorial Park Mausoleum.
