Lyle Richard “Bud” Anderson was born on November 30, 1921, at Algona, Iowa, to Oscar and Mae Anderson. He received his education in Algona, graduating from the Algona High School in 1939, where he played football and wrestled. Following graduation, he worked with his parents at the Chrome Truck Stop, which his parents founded in 1937. Bud served his country during World War II in the Air Force. 29 months were spent in the Central Pacific on numerous islands.
Bud was married to Mary Kathryn Schoby on April 18, 1948 at the First United Methodist Church in Algona. They lived in Algona, where he and Katy not only worked at the truck stop but built and operated the Colonial Motel for 13 years. Bud worked at the Security State Bank for three years and at the Exchange State Bank at Wesley, Iowa from 1974 until 1982. He was then employed at the United Central Bank in Bode, Iowa for 10 years and retired in 1983.
Bud was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Algona for over 50 years. He had belonged to the Algona Lion’s Club, was Past President of the Rotary Club, the Algona Chamber of Commerce, the Golden “K” Kiwanis and the Industrial Development Corp. He was active in the Senior Citizens and, along with other retired people, was instrumental in purchasing and remodeling the present Senior Citizen’s Center. Bud was a life member and Past Commander of the Hagg-Turner American Legion Post #90 and the V.F.W. Post #2541 in Algona. He was selected as a member of the National Honor Society at the Algona High School in November of 1995.
Bud enjoyed golfing, fishing and hunting. He and Katy loved traveling, and they took many trips to various places around the country.
Bud died on Thursday, July 19, 2007, at the Mercy Medical Center North Iowa in Mason City, Iowa. He was 85.
Surviving are his niece, Valerie Dungan and two grandnieces, Stephanie Dungan and Tracy Dungan. Relatives by marriage are James and Veda Thoreson, Garland, Texas and Robert and Darlene Hicks, Omaha, Nebraska.
