George Elmer Becker was born July 19, 1920 in Algona, son of Martin J. and Maybelle (Dunlevy) Becker. He grew up in the Algona and Burt area graduating from Burt High School in 1938. He then worked for Miller Lumber in Algona prior to serving in the United States Army during World War II.
George was united in marriage to Dorothy J. Young on January 7, 1945 at Harlingen, Texas. George and Dorothy lived in California for a short time where he worked in construction. They returned to the Burt area where he managed the lumber yard for 10 years and then worked as a wholesale lumber salesman for many years. In 1969, his family moved to Fort Dodge where he continued to work until retiring in 1982. In 1995, he moved to Des Moines to be closer to his children.
George loved being with his family. In his earlier years, he enjoyed wrestling and playing the fiddle. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, cooking, traveling, reading, wood carving, and visiting with his friends. He was a past member of the Burt Presbyterian Church serving as an elder and deacon and sang in the choir. He also was active in the Burt American Legion Post; the Walter Porsch VFW Post # 1856 in Fort Dodge; and the Highland Park American Legion Post # 374 in Des Moines.
George is survived by two children, Stephen M. Becker and his wife Patty of Des Moines, and Susan J. Becker of Des Moines; four grandchildren, Travis Becker and his wife Jenny of Des Moines, Jeremy Ferguson of Los Angeles, CA, and Emma and Carson Becker of Des Moines; and four great-grandchildren, Mikaela, Dylan, Taylor, and Nick. He is also survived by two sisters, Rachel Schnakenberg of LuVerne and Evelyn Mawdsley and her husband Roscoe of Burt; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Dorothy in May, 1969; a son, George Alan in 1948; and two brothers, Frank and Harold.
