Carlyle Henry Becker was born on August 6, 1907, at LuVerne, Iowa to William J. and Laura Bindewalt Becker. He graduated from the Algona High School in Algona, Iowa in 1927. Carlyle then attended the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa for 2 years. He was married to Orvilla Gilbertson on April 8, 1932, at Iowa City, Iowa. The couple lived in Algona, where Carlyle helped his father in the Elk Cleaners in Algona for a time. They then lived in Armstrong and West Bend, Iowa for a number of years, where Carlyle managed Creameries. The family moved to Central City, Iowa in 1950. While there, Carlyle managed a creamery and later owned an insurance business. He then worked for Link Belt Manufacturing. While in Central City, he served 2 years as President of the School Board and Secretary of the Linn County Fair and was a member of the Masonic Lodge.
Carlyle and Orvilla moved to Algona and owned and operated the Becker Sporting Goods Store. Carlyle retired in 1982, at the age of 75.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Algona. He enjoyed fishing and hunting when he was younger. Carlyle also enjoyed refinishing furniture.
Carlyle died on Monday, September 15, 2008, at the Kossuth Regional Health Center in Algona. He was 101.
Surviving are his son, John Becker, Algona, Iowa and his daughters, Lorna Reay and husband, Richard, Johnston, Iowa and Nancy Bernard, West Des Moines, Iowa. He is also survived by 6 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and 2 brothers, William Becker and wife, Sandy, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Richard Becker, Kansas City, Missouri. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Orvilla, his son, Robert, an infant brother, Walter, another brother, Dennis and 2 sisters, Helen Anderson and Florence Beaman.
