The son of Martin and MayBelle (Dunlevy) Becker, Frank Henry, was born August 16, 1922 on a farm near Irvington, Iowa. He attended Country Schools in Irvington and Portland townships, graduated from Burt High School in 1940, and joined the Army Air Force in l942. Sergeant Becker served three years in the Headquarter Squadron 437th Group, 53rd Wing, 9th Air Force as a radio operator of a direction finder during World War II. In 1945 Frank attended Iowa State University studying civil engineering. Frank married Virginia L. McWhorter on June 22, 1947 at the Burt Presbyterian Church. In 1948 he started farming in the Burt area next to the farms of his father and brothers, George & Harold. Frank was a longtime farmer in the Burt area and continued to live on the farm after he retired in 1983. He enjoyed farming, fishing, traveling, playing cribbage and cards, attending army reunions, listening to his five children sing, and driving around in his Cadillac watching his two sons and the area farmers tending the fields. Family fishing trips with “Grandpa Frank” were memorable to his nineteen grandchildren as well as the “wit & wisdom” that he offered to his family and friends at the Becker kitchen table. He was a member of the Burt Presbyterian Church, past Director of the Burt Cooperative Elevator, 59 year member of the Burt American Legion Post 0549, and the 437th Troop Carrier Group Association. Frank Henry Becker died Saturday, December 13, 2003 at the Kossuth Regional Health Center in Algona, Iowa at the age of 81.
