| | | | Marjorie M. “Marge” Baker was born on July 27, 1924 in LuVerne, Iowa to William Arnold and Mollie Ann (Redemske) Hedrick. She graduated from LuVerne High School in 1942 then went to work at North American Aviation in Los Angeles, California for three years. She returned to Iowa following the war and was married to Merlon Baker on February 14, 1950.
Marge worked as a waitress and cook at the Algona Country Club for 31 years and she and Merlon were managers for 14 years. Marge retired in 1980. Merlon died on December 23, 1981. On June 1, 1984, she started “Congregate Meals” here in Algona and was manager for 10 years. Marge had a special love for her children and her grandchildren. Church was very important to Marge, she had been a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Algona since 1948. She was active at the Algona Senior Citizens Center and enjoyed playing cards, and gardening.
Marge died on Friday, December 26, 2003 at the Kossuth Regional Healthcare Center, Algona, at the age of 79.
Survivors include her son William “Bill” Baker and his wife Pauline of Alamosa, Colorado and daughter Karen Zeimet of Algona; three grandchildren, Mike Baker, Alamosa, CO, Kelly Zeimet, Dana Point, CA, and Molly Zeimet, Des Moines. Also surviving are three sisters Alice Hanks of Pacific Palisades, California; Phyllis St. John and her husband Dale of Ft. Dodge, Iowa and Lois Rost and her husband Harold of Ft. Dodge, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.
Marge was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Merlon.
