Bertha L. Barker was born January 8, 1919 at Lotts Creek, Iowa to Richard and Adeline (Wetzel) Potratz. Bertha attended Lotts Creek School through the 8th Grade then graduated in 1937 from Algona High School. She worked in the grocery store in Whittemore and later in the bank before her marriage to Loren Barker on January 24, 1946 in Whittemore. In June, 1960, the couple moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin where Bertha worked as a head teller in a bank there. In 1985, the couple returned to Fenton where they lived until Loren died on June 20, 1993. Bertha continued to live in Fenton until she became a resident of Good Samaritan Center in March, 2004.
Bertha was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Lotts Creek. She enjoyed her flower garden as well as cross stitch and needlepoint.
Survivors include her three sons and two daughters, Myron Barker and Cheryl of Irvine, California; Bruce Barker and wife Ann of Eau Claire, Wisconsin; Andy Gancy and wife Linda of St. Louis, Missouri; Lola Eastman and husband Russell of Ankeny, Iowa; and Lita Tzannes and husband Dr. Nick of Orlando, Florida; former son-in-law Ray Hilkin and wife Glenda of Des Moines, Iowa; as well as granddaughter April Retzka of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; grandson Neil Lorbecke of Bakersfield, California; grandson Zackary Barker of Eau Claire, Wisconsin and granddaughter Makayla Barker of Eau Claire, Wisconsin as well as other grandchildren and great grandchildren. Also surviving are sisters Edna Wichtendahl of Fenton; Doloris Hopkins of Algona; and brother Arthur (Mike) Potratz and wife Dona of Tama, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, three brothers , Herbert, Alvin and Martin (Butch) and daughter Lavonne.
