| | | Gerald Charles “Jerry” Awe was born on June 15, 1912 at Paullina, Iowa to Fred and Catherine (Schmidt) Awe. He attended school at Paullina then worked as a mechanic at Ewoldt Motors in Paullina. On March 23, 1935, Jerry married Ideal Davis in Hartley, Iowa. The couple lived near Paullina until 1944. They then moved to rural LuVerne and farmed. He also worked as a mechanic at International Harvester and drove school bus. He later was employed at Universal Manufacturing in Algona. In 1970, Jerry moved from the farm into Algona. On June 28, 1974, Jerry was married to Phyllis Carr in Algona. She died on July 29, 1996. Jerry worked at Schultz Brothers in Algona and later at the Chrome, retiring at the age of 85 in 1997.
Jerry enjoyed woodworking, fishing, watching sports on TV, gardening, working in his yard as well as helping others with their yard-work. He also enjoyed listening to country-western music.
Jerry died early Wednesday morning, March 23, 2005 at the Kossuth Regional Health Center at the age of 92.
Survivors include his children, Gerald C. Awe, Jr. and wife Janice of Ft. Dodge, Ia.; Robert Awe and Joy of Ft. Dodge, Ia.; Dennis Awe and wife Linda of Algona and Janice Harmon and husband Lowell of Armstrong, Ia; two step-children Cheryl and husband Gary LaMaster of Minneapolis, MN and Darla Brunsen and husband Dick of Algona, Ia. Also surviving are five grandchildren, three step-grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, wives Ideal and Phyllis, two step sisters and one step brother.
