Julius William Baas was born December 11, 1921, in Whittemore, Iowa, the son of Julius and Regina Lehman Baas. He attended parochial school in Whittemore for six years, country school in Plum Creek Township for two years and graduated from Algona High School in 1939. After his schooling he began to farm with his father and continued farming until 1982.

On February 28, 1946, Julie was united in marriage to Elgena Calhoun in Algona. To this union two daughters were born. Elgena died in 1952. Julie was then married to Joan Scott on February 4, 1961, in Algona. The couple lived and farmed northeast of Algona. Joan died December 7, 1979. On November 28, 1981, Julie was married to Faye Cruickshank in Algona. Faye died January 26, 2003.

Julie was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church, in the past having sung in the choir and also serving as a Sunday School Treasurer for years. He enjoyed being outdoors, hunting and fishing, but most of all loved spending time with his grandchildren. Julie enjoyed most all sports, having played baseball, softball and bowled in his younger days. Julie was very active in Kossuth County, serving on the Soil Conservation Commission for 12 years, the Fair Barbecue Committee for 25 years and long time member of the Pork Producers serving as a Secretary and Treasurer. He was the Secretary and Treasurer of Pikeside Coop Electric for 20 years and was a Trustee of the Plum Creek Township Isaac Walton League.

Julie died Monday, January 15, 2007, at the Algona Good Samaritan Communities. He was 85.

He is survived by his daughters, Jo Ellen and Jerry Krug of Mount Auburn, IA; DyAnne and Don Henry Jr. of Marshalltown, IA; Sharon and Arnie Meyer of Algona, IA; Phyllis Gilbert of Spirit Lake, IA; grandchildren, Julie and Greg Starbeck of Cedar Falls, IA; Jennifer and Doug Larsen of Farmington, MN; Lisa and Joe Lane of Downers Grove, IL; Roger Gilbert of Carpentersville, IL; Derek and Jenny Henry of Highlands Ranch, CO; Pamela and Wade Helfer of Ames, IA; Damon Henry of Denver, CO; Brian and Tina Krug of Raleigh, NC; nine great-grandchildren; sister Helen and Jim Hanifen of Des Moines, IA; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three wives.
