Roger Lee Meyer was born February 17, 1950, to Alfred and Leona (Dreyer) Meyer at Algona, Iowa. He attended St. Paul Lutheran School through 8th grade and graduated from Algona High School in 1968. Roger attended both Centerville Junior College and Buena Vista College on baseball scholarships, and received the Most Valuable Player Award in 1972 at Buena Vista College. On September 5, 1971, Roger was united in marriage to Evonne Maahs at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Whittemore. He played semi pro baseball for Leviens Chevrolet at Ft. Dodge before returning to Whittemore to farm and raise livestock. In March, 1991, Roger purchased Maah’s Farm Supply and continued to farm on his 1883 Century Farm until his death.
Roger was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Algona, the National Dairy Herd Information Association and was a huge Yankees fan.
Roger died suddenly on Sunday afternoon, October 18, 2009, at Kossuth Regional Health Center in Algona at the age of 59.
Survivors include his wife Evonne of Whittemore, son Mike and fiancee Sara of West Des Moines, Iowa and daughter Jami and husband Scott Thacker of Collins, Iowa as well as three granddogs, Abby, Cleo and Scarlet. Also surviving is one brother Gayle Meyer and wife Jean of Whittemore and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles.
