Mr. Hugh Ervin "Sonny" Peery, 74, retired teacher and resident of Mooresville Pike, died Monday, September 21, 2009 at St. Thomas Hospital.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Thursday at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Rev. Matthew Wood and Troy Dugger officiating. Burial will be in Brown Cemetery in the Cathey’s Creek Community with military honors provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19. The family will visit with friends after 3:00 P.M. Wednesday and after 12:00 noon Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Hugh Peery Scholarship Fund at First Community Credit Union, Attn: Sandra Church, 1623 Hatcher Lane, Columbia, TN 38401. Notes of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.oakesandnichols.com.

The Maury County native was the son of the late Andrew Jackson Peery and Izora Wise Peery. He was a 1953 graduate of Culleoka High School and graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1958 with a Bachelor's Degree in agriculture. He earned his Master's Degree from Tennessee State University. Mr. Peery began his career teaching agriculture at Culleoka High School on August 31, 1959 and retired August 1, 1998. He obtained a rank of Captain while serving in the United States Army. He was a member of the NEA, TEA, and MCEA and the Tennessee Retired Teacher's Association. He was a lifetime member of the Culleoka FFA Alumni Association and served on the Maury County Farm Bureau Board of Directors. He was awarded the Honorary American FFA Degree. He was a member of Friendship Baptist Church and had more recently been attending and was a Sunday School teacher at Blue Springs Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of forty-five years, Carolyn Dowdy Peery of Culleoka; one daughter, Regina Lynn Peery of Culleoka; two sons, Nathan Hugh (Elizabeth) Peery of Fayetteville; Byron Jackson (Christy) Peery of Columbia; five grandchildren, Makayla Peery, Adrianna Peery, Janie Peery, Katie Peery, Libby Peery; one step grandchild, Anderson Vanbibber; three sisters, Imogene (Ewell B.) Harris of Columbia; Geraldine (W. C.) Johnson of Mt. Pleasant; Judy (Curtis) Anderson of Culleoka.

He was preceded in death by one son, Marcus Ervin Peery and one sister, Lequita Rose.

Pallbearers will be Ronnie Harris, Jeff Harris, Ken Jordan, Kevin Rose, J. D. Lineberry, and Richard Callahan. Honorary pallbearers will be present and former advisors of the FFA Bluegrass District and 1959-1998 Culleoka FFA members.
