John Vernon Bakke, age 71, of Menomonie, WI passed away July 2, 2007 at the Heritage of Elmwood Nursing Home. John was the son of Vernon and Esther (Behling) Bakke. He was born July 22, 1935. He attended Evergreen Valley School and Dunn County Agricultural School. John was confirmed at Peace Lutheran Church in Menomonie. As a young man, he worked in the woods with his uncle and also worked for the Kraft Bank Farms and area farmers. Upon his father’s death, he took over operation of the family farm. John married Carol Quilling on August 5, 1972. He continued farming and made many improvements. The Bakke farm is a century farm having originated in the Bakke name in 1877, a fact that John was very proud of. He enjoyed farming and caring for his animals. John also enjoyed horses and his John Deere tractors. His last outing was to the local tractor parade. Playing cards with family and friends was another activity he loved. John is survived by his wife Carol, sisters Marian (Ray) Hammond and Marlys (George) Jimos, brothers-in-law Jerome and Wayne (Nancy) Quilling, several nieces and nephews, and many dear friends. “His smile and ready wit will be greatly missed. Rest in peace.” Funeral services will be at 11:00 am Saturday, July 7, 2007 at Peace Lutheran Church in Menomonie, with Pastors Dave Whelan and Jill Connery officiating. Burial will be in Mamre Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm Friday, July 6, 2007 at Olson Funeral Home in Menomonie, and one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.
