| ELIZABETH J. “BETTE” AMBERG
Elizabeth J. “Bette” Amberg, age 85, of Menomonie, WI passed away Thursday Jan. 12, 2006 at the Dunn County Health Care Center in Menomonie. She had fought a battle against cancer since 1993. The former Elizabeth Downing was born September 20, 1920 in Ontario, Vernon Co., Wisconsin to Guy and Evelyn (Harrie) Dowing. She attended the local schools and then attended the Hansberry Hospital Nursing Program in Hillsboro, WI. She worked for a number of years at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Hillsboro. She was united in marriage to Leonard E. Amberg on November 2, 1942 in Trenton, Missouri. In 1954, they established the Amberg Oil Co. in Menomonie and together they ran the business until Leonard passed away on September 26, 1982. She was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Menomonie and actively participated in the Women’s Fellowship Tour of Homes. She played Tournament Bridge and was an avid card player. While Leonard was alive, she was very active in his Lion’s Club District Governor duties and board appointments. She enjoyed crafting, reading, knitting and spending time with her family and friends. Bette will be deeply missed and was loved by everyone who knew her. Bette is survived by: A daughter, Judith (Richard) Schrade of Amery A son, Steven Amberg of Menomonie 3 grandchildren Jessica Amberg of Minneapolis Nathaniel (Lindsay Lassen) Amberg of Hudson Kimberly (T.J.) Kowalski of Woodbury, MN A great-grandson, Jacob Kowalski A sister-in-law, Margaret ”Peg” Downing of Tomah Several nieces and nephews And abundant amount of friends She is preceded in death by her husband, Leonard Amberg; her parents; her brothers, Richard and Carl Downing; a sister, Mildred White; and a granddaughter, Amy Schrade. Funeral services will be at 11:00 AM Wednesday, January 18, 2006 at First Congregational UCC in Menomonie with Reverend Rob MacDougall officiating. Burial will be in Christ Lutheran/Halvorson Cemetery in Menomonie. Visitation will be from 4:00 - 8:00 PM Tuesday at Olson Funeral Home in Menomonie, and at the church one hour prior to the service on Wednesday. The family suggests memorials to the American Cancer Society, Women’s Fellowship of First Congregational Church or charity of donor’s choice.
