Evelyn E. Beguhn

Evelyn E. Beguhn, age 92, of Menomonie, passed away Monday, May 22, 2006 at the Dunn County Health Care Center in Menomonie. She is our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend.

Evelyn was born September 1, 1913 to Henry and Ida (Cook) Hintz. She was the oldest of six children, and grew up in the Town of Sherman on the family farm. She worked very hard throughout her life, and one of her proudest accomplishments was completing eight grades in seven years at Blanchard School in the Town of Sherman. She was unable to continue formal schooling and fulfill her dream of becoming a teacher due to her responsibilities on the family farm, but she was a lifelong learner and taught many of us along the way.

Upon leaving the family farm, she worked as a nanny, housekeeper and cook. She married Herbert Beguhn, Jr. on June 16, 1934. They had one daughter, Arla, and Evelyn was a wonderful homemaker and mother. Once Arla started high school, Evelyn returned to work owning and operating the “Shoe Hospital” where she repaired and dyed shoes. She also worked at the 400 Club and Montgomery Wards. She was a lifelong member of Peace Lutheran Church.

Evelyn enjoyed traveling the U.S. and Europe and camping with family and friends. She was a wonderful cook, baker, seamstress and gardener. Like her mother, she grew beautiful flowers and they gave enjoyment to many. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were blessed with her wonderful meals, baked goods, hand made clothing and her laughter, love, great wit and good conversation. She also enjoyed card parties, senior center activities and spending time with her daughter and family. Her sense of humor and her love, character, devotion, friendship and smile will forever be remembered and cherished by those fortunate to have known her. She touched many hearts.

Evelyn is survived by:
Her daughter, Arla May of Menomonie; four grandchildren, Kim Das, Stephen May, Tara Flaschenriem and Leigh May; five great-grandchildren, Christopher and Chelsea Das, Colin and Landon May and Lauren Flaschenriem; sister, Loraine Wedam; brother Willard “Bill” Hintz; brother-in law Lyle Behling; sister-in-law Jean Hintz; nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son-in-law Calvin “Kelly” May; sisters Edna Sitzman and Vernetta Behling; brother Vernon Hintz; brothers-in law Gilbert Beguhn, Richard Sitzman and John Wedam; and sisters-in-law Alice Beguhn, Barb Hintz and Mary Ann Sterry.

Funeral Services will be at 2 pm Friday, May 26, 2006 at Peace Lutheran Church with Reverend Dave Whelan officiating. Burial will be in Christ Lutheran/Halvorson Cemetery in Menomonie. Visitation will be Thursday from 5-8 pm at Olson Funeral Home in Menomonie, and Friday at the church one hour before services.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to the Peace Lutheran Church building fund. To express condolences online, please visit obituaries at www.olsonfh.net.
