| | | OLIVE B. BEAVER
Olive B. Beaver, age 100, of Menomonie, WI died Sunday Nov. 19, 2006 at the Dunn County Health Care Center.
Olive’s parents, Magnus and Julia (Bendickson) Hylbak came to America from Surnadahl, Norway in 1881 and settled in Lake Mills, Iowa. Olive was born, the second of six children, on January 14, 1906. She graduated from Normal School in Lake Mills in 1924. She taught in a rural school for two years and then fell in love and married Howard Charles Beaver. They moved to Wisconsin in 1926. Olive received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from UW-Eau Claire and taught school in Knapp and Downing for many years.
Olive and her husband operated a farm south of Menomonie named “Rolling Acres” and raised their two sons, Howard Charles “Chuck” Beaver Jr. and Alan Hylbak Beaver. She maintained her beautiful vegetable and flower gardens, and enjoyed many other hobbies such as sewing, reading, cooking, playing the piano, and most of all, spending time with her family. Olive was a wonderful teacher to her grandchildren and great grandchildren and there were always fresh cookies in her cookie jar, and white peppermints in her candy dish.
In her early 70’s, Olive was the start of something special for seniors in Menomonie. She was instrumental in developing the Senior Citizen Center and was the center’s first president. Her beloved Howard died in March of 1972. After his death she continued her community involvement and participation. She was the first president of the local chapter of the American Association of Retired Persons and the first secretary and president twice of the Wisconsin Retired Teachers Association. She was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church and an active member until her later years.
In 1978 Olive married Leon Turner, a retired schoolteacher from Colfax. They enjoyed traveling, their families and activities at the Senior Citizen Center and in the community. Leon died in 1990 and Olive moved to Tantara Apartments where she met so many wonderful friends. In her late eighties, Olive was still active, visiting friends in area nursing homes and hospitals. She was also involved in tutoring local Hmong families in English.
When asked a few years ago what her deepest values were she wrote, “Loving and caring for each other and a religious faith that works for God and your family.” “For the future, cleaner air, and unpolluted water and may all of you enjoy good health and happiness as I have been so wonderfully blessed.”
