| | | Rock Valley, IA - Raymond Miedema, 85, died Sunday, September 28, 2008 at Hegg Memorial Hospital, Rock Valley. Funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m., Saturday at First Reformed Church, Rock Valley. Private family burial will be at Valley View Cemetery, Rock Valley. Reverend Mike Van Hamersveld will officiate. Visitation with the family present will be 3 – 5 p.m. and 6 – 8 p.m. Friday at Porter Funeral Home, Rock Valley. Memorials may be directed to Hegg Memorial Hospital Foundation.
Raymond Miedema was born April 16, 1923 on the homestead in western Sioux County, Iowa, son of Dick and Anna (Reinalda) Medema. He served in WWII in the Pacific Theater as a gunner on Iwo Jima. After the war, Ray returned to Rock Valley and married Alyce Van Holland on May 21, 1946 at Rock Valley. They lived in Rock Valley until moving to California in 1952. He obtained his Class B contractors license and worked in construction. In 1969 Ray and Alyce moved to Fairview, SD and back to Rock Valley in 1992.
Ray is survived by his 3 sons: Richard (Carol) Miedema of Moreno Valley, CA, Robert (Alora) Miedema of Las Vegas, NV and R Mark(Deborah) Miedema of Keizer, OR; 9 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters: Winnie Fredrickson of Alcester, SD and Clazena Sorum of Canton, SD; one brother, Clarence (Geneva) Medema of Lennox, SD.
Ray was preceded by his wife, Alyce; his parents, Dick and Anna; 2 brothers George Medema and Pete Medema; sister Ann Medema; and baby sister Klazena Medema.
