Viola Liston was born in rural Hawarden, Iowa in 1922. She lived on the family farm until her mid twenties, working the fields and helping her parents. She worked in LeMars at the overall factory for a few years, but after her marriage to Howard Liston in 1952, she returned to her parent’s home place to begin her married life. Howard and Viola rented a few farms until they purchased their own place just north of Chatsworth. While living in Chatsworth they raised their four children and were active members of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church. Playing fast pitch softball, pinochle, and visiting with her many friends and relatives were some of her favorite pastimes. In 1977, Viola and her family moved into Hawarden and joined the American Lutheran Church. Always a hard worker, Viola found new ways to keep busy, especially cleaning homes with her sister-in-law, Dorothy. Howard passed away in 1984. Viola continued to work, take walks, play cards, garden, and to be a source of joy to others with her quick laugh and fun spirit.
Just recently, she moved to Hillcrest Health Care Center where she was surrounded by lifelong friends and was always excited to make new ones. It was there that she spent her final days, surrounded by her children, large extended family and many friends.
Viola is survived by four children, Doug Liston and wife Michelle of Dakota City, Nebraska and their children, Kyle and Keith; Steve Liston and wife Susan of Omaha, Nebraska and their children Devon and Trent; Bonni Newton and husband Ken of Clive, Iowa and their children, Andrea (Newton) and husband Brian Maples and their daughter Sydney and Alisha Newton; and Nancy Liston of St. Augustine, Florida; also Viola is survived by her three brothers, John Van Wyhe of Hawarden, Robert Van Wyhe of Hawarden, and Ray Van Wyhe and wife Dorothy of Hawarden; and two sisters, Hazel Popma of Pipestone, Minnesota and Leona Koopmans of Ireton.
Viola was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two brothers, Lawrence and Elmer; and a sister, Mildred.
