HAWARDEN, IOWA- CLARENCE HARMS, 94, of Hawarden, died Friday, October 3, 2008 at his residence. Funeral Service will be 10:30 a.m., Wednesday at the American Lutheran Church in Hawarden. Burial will be at Grace Hill Cemetery with Rev. Frederick R. Jordan officiating. Visitation will begin at noon on Tuesday with the family present from 6:30-8 p.m. at Porter Funeral Home, Hawarden.

Clarence Harms was born February 2, 1914 to John and Katherina (Rewerts) Harms near LeMars, IA. He attended country school near LeMars. Clarence served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II in Italy and North Africa from 1942-1945. Clarence was united in marriage to Baulah Riphagen on December 27, 1951 in Sioux Center, IA. Together they moved from LeMars to Hawarden in 1952. Clarence owned and operated the Hawarden Hatchery which became Harms Feed and Supply in 1963. He sold the business in 1974 and stayed on as part time help until 1979. Clarence enjoyed fishing, woodworking, horses, dogs and especially spending time with family.

Clarence is survived by his wife, Baulah; one son, Stanley (Valerie) Harms of Clinton, Township, MI; one daughter, Cheryl (Craig) Colton of Stillwater, MN; two grandchildren: Jason Harms and John Colton; one sister, Hilda Harms of LeMars, IA.

He was preceded in death by his parents; infant brother, Jurgen Harms; brothers: Carl, Fred, Alfred and Donald Harms; sisters: Meta Eilers, Kate Carstenson and Theresa Engel.
