Orange City, IA: George H. Van Beek, 85, formerly of Rock Valley, died Thursday, October 23, 2008. Memorial Service will be 11 am Monday at First Reformed Church, Rock Valley. Burial will be prior to the service at Valley View Cemetery. Rev. Mike Van Hamersveld will be officiating. Visitation will be Sunday with family present 2-3:30 pm at Porter Funeral Home, Rock Valley.

George was born July 19, 1923 at Sanborn, Iowa, son of Dick and Dora (Kroese) Van Beek. George grew up in the Rock Valley area and attended the Rock Valley Schools and obtained his GED at NCC of Sheldon. He worked for area farmers and for Sioux County on its road crew. George married Anna Marie Rozeboom on June 11, 1946 in a double wedding with her sister Harriet and Albert Broek. George and Anna Marie lived in Rock Valley 2 years then 2 ½ miles east of Rock Valley where they raised their family and farmed 38 years. In 1986 they retired and moved back to Rock Valley. Anna Marie died March 8, 2006.

George served on many boards and committees, Rock Valley School Board (1964-1973), 7 years as President; Area 4 Education Board; NW IA Mental Health; Sioux County Farm Bureau and received Lifetime Achievement Award; 6 years on Sioux County Extension Council. At First Reformed Church he was on many Building Committees, served three terms as Sunday School Superintendent; and for decades volunteered to maintain the church organ and answered many emergency calls.

George is survived by daughter, Andrea Van Beek of Orange City, IA; son, Kevin (Laura) Van Beek of Rock Valley; daughter-in-law Nel Van Beek of Sheldon, IA; sisters, Elsie Kooima, Arlene Van Den Top, and Maxine (Loren) Hansen all of Rock Valley; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren. George was preceded in death by his wife, Anna Marie, infant son, Kelvin in 1951, and son, Dr. G. Richard Van Beek in 1994.
