| | | LaVelle Kirkland Harris, 82, of Searcy, Arkansas passed away on the evening of October 7, 2009. She was the oldest child born to Albert and Elizabeth Kirkland, September 14, 1927 in El Paso, Arkansas. She grew up at Oak Church of Christ in El Paso and was baptized as a young girl. She then attended Four Mile Hill Church of Christ in Searcy later in life. She learned at an early age what hard work was, being raised on a farm and picking cotton. She married Gerald Harris and they moved to Searcy where they raised their son Joel. After many years of service, she retired from Harding University.
She is preceded in death by her only son, Joel Harris, her husband and her parents.
Surviving are her sister, Syble Glover and husband Wayne of Beebe. She is also survived by nieces, Karen Harrell and husband Rick of El Paso, LaBeth Boroughs and husband Pat of Cabot and a nephew, Keith Breckenridge and wife Carol of El Paso. She is also survived by four great nieces, one great-great niece, three great nephews, and two great-great nephews. Until recently, when she became so ill, she never missed a niece or nephew’s birthday without sending a card. She has many friends from church and the University, who have kept in touch over the years. They will miss her dearly.
A special “thank-you” to Janie Swain and her daughter, Kim Holloway, for their love and care for so many months. We always knew you were looking out for her well-being.
LaVelle had a long battle with diabetes and was the second in her family to be taken by the disease. Please make your memorials in her honor to the Diabetes Foundation, or Harding University.
Funeral services will be 2 pm Saturday at the Powell Funeral Home of Searcy. Visitation will be from 1 pm to 2 pm, prior to the service. Interment will follow in Blasingame Cemetery at El Paso. www.powellfuneralhome.net
