| | | Elizabeth W. “Betty” Bascom, 78, of 1651 Blockville-Watts Flats Rd., Ashville, died Wednesday (Feb. 25, 2009) in St. Vincent Health Center, Erie, Pa.
One of the last surviving members of the original Whittier Apple Farm family, she lived her entire life on the road in the Town of Harmony where she was born on Feb. 16, 1931, the daughter of L. Reed and Frances L. Brown Whittier. She was a 1949 graduate of Panama High School.
Prior to retiring, she had been a mail carrier for 23 ˝ years for the Ashville Post Office. In earlier years she had worked on the family apple farm, had owned and operated Betty’s Coffee Shop in Lakewood, and had been a cook at the Davis Tea Room in Chautauqua.
She was a member of the Blockville United Methodist Church, where she had held many offices, was president for many years of the Blockville Union Burying Ground Society, was a member of the Harmony Historical Society, the Red Hatters Society, where she was a Past Queen, had served as an election inspector for many years, was a volunteer driver for the Office for the Aging, was a member and former secretary of the Rural Letter Carriers Association, and was a member of the Town of Harmony and Chautauqua County Republican Committees. She was also a life member of the Southwestern District Parent Teachers Association, where she had served as treasurer.
No one was ever a stranger for long to Betty, as she was a friend to everyone. Always a source of information for the community, she was interested in everything, but liked people best. She loved her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, and enjoyed her career as a letter carrier. She also enjoyed sewing, crocheting, knitting, reading, and crossword puzzles.
Betty is survived by three sons: Timothy L. Bascom of Kennedy, Todd L. Bascom of Stafford, Va., and Thomas L. Bascom of McLean, Va.; two daughters: Terrill L. Forbes of Hampton, Va. and Trudy L. Derby of Ashville; thirteen grandchildren; four great grandchildren; a nephew, Donald Bennink of Bell, Fla.; and life-long friends too numerous to mention.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert C. Bascom, whom she married April 17, 1949 in Clymer, and who died Feb. 25, 2002; a sister, Frances E. Bennink; a brother, John B. Whittier; and by a nephew, John Bennink.
The funeral will be at 11:00 A.M. in Powers, Present & Sixbey Funeral Home. Burial will be in Blockville Union Burying Ground. A luncheon will follow the service at the Harmony Historical Society, Open Meadows Rd., Blockville.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 5:00 P.M. Sunday in the funeral home. Email messages to the family may be sent by visiting the website www.presentsixbeyfuneral .com.
Betty and her family extend their thanks and appreciation to all their relatives, friends, and neighbors who have been of assistance over the years.
The family suggests that memorials may be made to the Harmony Historical Society; the Panama Volunteer Fire Department; or to the Ashville Library.
