| | | Laurin D. Brainard, 97, of 2444 Beech St., died at 7:30 P.M. Thursday (March 12, 2009) in his home.
He was born Dec. 27, 1911 in Jamestown, the son of Donald O. and Alma T. Olson Brainard. He attended school in Lakewood.
A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he attained the rank of Technical Corporal, and earned five battle stars. He served with the 103rd Combat Engineer Battalion, and fought in the Battle of the Bulge with the 28th Keystone Division.
Prior to retiring in 1984, he had worked in the sample room of Union National Furniture Co. for 13 years, and earlier had been employed for 17 years in the assembly department of Art Metal Manufacturing Corp. and for 20 years at Davis-Randolph Furniture Co., where he had been a foreman. In his youth he had worked in lumbering at a time when timber harvesting was done with hand saws.
He had formerly attended the old First United Methodist Church, and had been a member of Local #34, United Furniture Workers.
Always one with a great sense of humor, he liked animals, especially dogs, and was a skilled cabinet maker. He had spent much time caring for his late wife during her declining years.
Surviving is a son, Laurin E. (Debbie) Brainard of Jamestown, with whom he had made his home since 2003; a daughter, Linda J. Brainard of Perrysburg, N.Y.; and a step granddaughter, Andrea Pfister of Jamestown.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Florence Iloie Brainard, whom he married in 1954 in Westfield, and who died Sept. 7, 1990; and by two sisters: Allene B. Skellie and Alta May Brainard.
