Irene B. Rogers, 88, of 3971 Westman Rd., Bemus Point, died at 7:30 A.M. Sunday (April 19, 2009) in the Lutheran Home and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born April 9, 1921 in Busti, the daughter of George E. and Ruth Holmquist Burkland.
She was a 1939 graduate of Jamestown High School, and was also a 1942 graduate of Rider College in New Jersey.
Prior to her retirement in 1984, she had been a business teacher at Pine Valley Central School, and had previously been a teacher in the Southwestern Central School District. In earlier years she had been an executive secretary to Mr. Cappa at Crawford Furniture Co.
She was a charter member of St. Timothy Lutheran Church, was a member of the Marvin Community House, where she had served as secretary, was a member of the 100 Member Club of Jamestown High School, and had previously served as an election inspector in the town of Ellery.
Hard working and of a great sense of humor, she had an endearing innocent nature and was always anxious to share with others. She enjoyed bird watching, crossword puzzles, and her rose gardens.
Surviving are two daughters: Judy R. (Jim) Moynihan and Venice I. Rogers, and a sister, Carol J. Hall, all of Jamestown; and a brother, George E. Burkland, Jr. of Fredonia.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard J. Rogers, whom she married Jan. 13, 1946 in Immanuel Lutheran Church; and who died May 7, 1999; and by three sisters: Garnet Lamberson, Geneva Burkland, and Janice Hanselman.
The funeral will be at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday in Powers, Present & Sixbey Funeral Home. Burial will be in Bemus Point Cemetery.
The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the funeral service Wednesday in the funeral home. Messages to the family may be sent by visiting the website www.presentsixbeyfuneral.com.
The family suggests that memorials may be made to the Bemus Point Volunteer Fire Dept., PO Box 306, Bemus Point, NY 14712; or to Chautauqua County Humane Society, 2825 Strunk Rd., Jamestown, NY 14701.
