Robert William Bergholtz, 79, of 6583 Lighthouse Point Rd., Mayville, passed away peacefully at 7:16 P.M. Monday (May 4, 2009) in Westfield Memorial Hospital.
He was born December 29, 1929 in East Otto, N.Y., the son of the late Ward and Mildred (Wing) Bergholtz.
Following his graduation from Cattaraugus High School, Bob received his Bachelor of Science degree in physical education from Western Illinois University, and later earned a Master of Science degree in physical education from Ithaca College.
Prior to beginning his career as a physical education teacher, he served in the U.S. Army for two years during the Korean War.
He began teaching at Pine Valley Central School, moving on to Brocton Central School and finishing his last 17 years at Chautauqua Central School. Bob became a very well respected coach at all three high schools while coaching football, basketball, volleyball, track, cross country, and golf. His teams earned 7 sectional championships and 3 county championships. He always emphasized strong fundamentals while having a positive impact on his players.
He loved the outdoors, continuing to fish, ice fish, and hunt through all four seasons of the year. Bob was an avid golfer throughout his retirement and recently participated in the County Senior Golf League. He was also an active member of the Chautauqua Lake Memorial Post VFW, the Mayville American Legion, and the AMVETS.
He is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law: Gregory S. Bergholtz and his wife Yvonne of Simsbury, Conn., and Martin R. Bergholtz of Bemus Point; and three grandchildren: Kate, Kyle, and Kevin, all of Simsbury, Conn. He is also survived by a brother and sister-in-law: Richard and Kay Bergholtz of Mount Dora, Fla., and their five children along with many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will not be observed. The funeral will be at 11:00 A.M. Friday in Powers, Present & Sixbey Funeral Home. A private burial for family and friends will immediately follow at the Liberty Park Cemetery in Cattaraugus, N.Y. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice Chautauqua County, 4840 West Lake Rd., Mayville, N.Y. 14757.
