Clarence R. “Bob” Franzen, 84, of Ellicott Shores, Celoron, died unexpectedly at 8:02 A.M. Wednesday (May 27, 2009) in WCA Hospital.
He was born Oct. 2, 1924 in Jamestown, the son of Carl V. and Selma Nelson Franzen.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served from March 9, 1943 to Dec. 12, 1946.
Prior to retiring in 1985, he had been employed for 30 years in the shipping department of Marlin-Rockwell Corp. In earlier years he had worked at Blackstone Corp. and at the family-owned Franzen’s Market in Jamestown.
Confirmed in the First Lutheran Church, he was a member of the Celoron Moose, the Chautauqua Lake Fishing Assoc., was a Life Member of Herman Kent Post 777 American Legion, and was a former member of the Lakewood Rod and Gun Club.
A quiet man, his underlying dry sense of humor was especially brought out by his grandchildren. Bob always said that his first love was the lake, where he loved fishing and boating. He also enjoyed playing pinochle, local history, collecting old post cards of the area, and still enjoyed riding his bicycle right up until the day of his passing at age 84.
Surviving is his wife, Elsie Deppas Franzen, whom he married July 18, 1949 in the First Lutheran Church; a daughter, Carol J. (Kevin) Brown of Jamestown; a son, Paul R. (Hila) Franzen of Jamestown; five grandchildren: Ericka (Jayson) Arndt of Lakewood, Emelee (Dan) Johnson, Shawna Brown, Melissa (Bill Israel) Belli, and Torey (Linda) Armella, all of Jamestown; six great grandchildren: Devin, Mykala, and Casey Arndt, all of Lakewood, Madison Belli, and Camden and Colton Armella, all of Jamestown; along with two twin great granddaughters, due to be born in September of 2009.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his step-mother, Jennie Johnston Franzen; three brothers: Marvin C., Gaylord M., and George W. Franzen; a sister, Carol O. Foltz; and a step sister, Dorothy F. Johnson.
The funeral will be at 11:00 A.M. Monday in Powers, Present & Sixbey Funeral Home. The rev. Timothy Stahlman, pastor of Family Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Soldiers Circle of Lake View Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 4:00 P.M. Sunday in the funeral home. Messages to the family may be sent by visiting the website www.presentsixbeyfuneral.com.
Memorials may be made to the Chautauqua Lake Fishing Assoc., Celoron, N.Y. 14720.
