Eleanor C. Wood, 84, of 45 Panama-Bear Lake Rd., Panama, died at 6:00 P.M. Sunday (May 31, 2009) in her home.
She was born Aug. 2, 1924 in Jamestown, the daughter of William A. and Ethel LeRoy Backus. She was a 1941 graduate of the former Lakewood High School, where she was active in productions.
Prior to retiring in 1980, she had been employed with the Chautauqua County Nutrition Program.
She was a charter member of Lakewood Memorial Post 1286 Auxiliary, was also a member of the Lakewood Rod and Gun Club, and had served as a volunteer with the American Red Cross for nine years.
Church choir singing was always very enjoyable and important to Mrs. Wood, beginning as a child with the junior choir at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. She was currently a member of the Panama United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the choir until ill health caused her to give up that important part of her life in 2001.
She is survived by her husband, Ivan P. Wood, whom she married Sept. 18, 2004; a son, Jon M. Corstange of Miami, Fla.; a daughter, Cynthia L. Xanders of Lakeland, Fla.; three grandchildren: Deanna R. Brown, Kelly K. Gerharz, and David Xanders, all of Lakeland, Fla.; five step children: Donald Wood of Blockville, Dan Wood of Phoenix, Ariz., Rosie Faull of Titusville, Fla., Robin Hurst of Framingham, Mass., and Yvonne Wolfe of Statesville, N.C.; seven step grandchildren: Donald Curtis of Panama, Christine Hurley of Chili, N.Y., Dan Wood, Jr. of Boiling Brook, Ill., Richard and Alice Hurst of Framingham, Mass., David Johnson of Fla., and Michele Yahnner of Jamestown.
several great grandchildren and step great grandchildren; a sister, Diane R. Holmes of Jamestown; and a brother, John R. Carlson of Pinckneyville, Ill.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Marvin B. Corstange; her second husband, Robert L. Carpenter; and by a son, David B. Corstange.
The funeral will be at 11:00 A.M. Thursday in Powers, Present & Sixbey Funeral Home. The Rev. Stephen Wiggers, pastor of Panama United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery.
