| | | | Isabelle Charlotte Jackson died peacefully at her home in Jamestown, New York on July 23, 2009 at the age of 93. Isabelle was born Nov. 22, 1915 in Newberry, S.C. She was the last surviving child of the late Andrew and Lilla D. Gallman Jackson.
When the family moved to Jamestown she completed her early education through the Jamestown School System and graduated from High School in 1932. She later earned both bachelors and masters degrees from Howard University and an additional maters degree from Indiana University.
Prior to joining the Jamestown Community College faculty in 1964 as and instructor and counselor, she was Dean of Women at Tougaloo College in Jackson, Mississippi from 1949 to 1963. She was also the director of the Jamestown YWCA Co-Ed Center from 1963 to 1964. During her career at Jamestown Community College which spanned over 30 years, Miss Jackson directed the college’s educational opportunity and veterans affairs programs, and facilitated a number of other special outreach efforts.
She was the recipient of several awards, including Women of the Year of the Inter-Club Council of Jamestown in 1969, Civic Leader Award from the National Conference of Christians and Jews in 1985, the Outstanding Citizen Award from the Ebony Task Force in 1990, and numerous other awards.
She was a former member of the American Association of University Women, the American Association of University Professors, the National Association of Women Deans and Counselors, Cassadaga Job Corps board of directors, Jamestown Community College’s Minority Community Advisory Council, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the Jamestown YWCA, the Jamestown YMCA, the Jamestown Zonta Club, and The Links.
She was a lifetime member of Emmanuel Baptist Church where she served in many organizations and worked with the youth group. She was also a lifetime member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Delta Kappa Gamma, Phi Beta Kappa, and other Greek organizations.
Known lovingly as “Aunt Issy”, she leaves to mourn nieces and nephews George A. (Annie) Wilson of Jamestown, Lilla D. (John) Howard of Chicago, Ill., Florence Louella Bryant of Chicago, Vicky Goble of Brooklyn, N.Y., Elizabeth Lipsey of Buffalo; great nieces and nephews Glenn, Barbara, and Kenneth Otis of Chicago, Yolanda Strudwick of Val Rico, Fla., Andrew, Gregg, and Chad Wilson of Jamestown, and LaTasha Lipsey of Buffalo; many grand nieces, nephews, and cousins; special friends Carmen Lydell, Adena Woodward, and Tommie Samkrange of Harare, Zimbabwe; and adopted nieces Sherdena Brackman and Mary A. Walker.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers: Andrew and George Jackson; two sisters: Thelma Lipsey and Grace Willoughby; and by a niece, Doris Mackey.
The funeral will be at 11:00 A.M. Thursday in Emmanuel Baptist Church. The Rev. Leroy Walker, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Lake View Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 – 4:00 and 6:00 – 8:00 P.M. Wednesday in Powers, Present & Sixbey Funeral Home. Messages to the family may be sent by visiting the website www.presentsixbeyfuneral.com.
The family suggests that memorials may be made to the Joanne Wilson Wade Scholarship Fund, c/o Meharry Medical School, Nashville, Tenn., or to Jamestown Community College.
