| | | Herman Gustave “Hymie” Johnson, 98, of 520 Winsor St., formerly of the Carpenter-Pringle Rd., Ashville, died at 3:45 A.M. Saturday (Oct. 24, 2009) in the Lutheran Home and Rehabilitation Center.
He was born July 11, 1911 on Long Island, N.Y., the son of John and Esther Johnson Johnson.
He was a 1930 graduate of the Rocky Grove, Pa. High School. He ws involved in many sports, including basketball, and held the pole vaulting record at Rocky Grove for 30 years. Following his graduation, he spent two years working with the Civilian Conservation Corps.
During the 1940’s he moved to the Jamestown area, where he worked as a mold maker at Malleable Iron Co. for 36 years before retiring.
He was a former member of the Randolph Golf League and the Hope’s Windows Bowling League.
Mr. Johnson loved and enjoyed his family, including his grandchildren and great grandchildren, and enjoyed golf, bowling, hunting, and fishing.
Surviving are two sons: Herman G. Johnson, Jr. of Ashtabula, Ohio And David B. Johnson of North Carolina; two daughters: Jacquelyn R. Williams of Jamestown and Kathleen A. Wright of Mayville; sixteen grandchildren; twenty-three great grandchildren; two sisters: Lorraine McCauley of Rocky Grove, Pa. and Leora Zenz of Franklin, Pa.; and a brother, Shaler Johnson of Florida.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth E. McDonald Johnson, whom he married Dec. 24, 1935 in Rocky Grove, and who died July 9, 1993; a daughter, Linda M. Stanford; a grandson, Jeffrey S. Williams; three sisters: Ione Spiot, Esther Franklin, and Thelma Marwood; and a brother, John Johnson.
A graveside service will be at 1:30 P.M. Wednesday in Franklin Cemetery in Franklin, Pa.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. Tuesday in Powers, Present & Sixbey Funeral Home. Messages to the family may be sent by visiting the website www.presentsixbeyfuneral.com.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials may be made to a charity of choice.
