| | | | Joseph J. Urbanik, 84, of 3931 S. Nesmith Ave., Bemus Point, died at 7:25 P.M. Saturday (Oct. 16, 2004) in the Lutheran Retirement Home.
He was born April 12, 1920 in Dunkirk, a son of Adam and Anna Kopacz Urbanik.
A 1940 graduate of Jamestown High School, he was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II, having served from Jan 12, 1942 to OCt. 15, 1945 as a coporal with the Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division. He took part in the invasion and battles of Guadacanal, Plealieu, the Russell Islands, New Guinea, and Ngesebus Tulagi.
He was a 36 year employee of the Jamestown Telephone Co., where he worked as a cable splicer from Feb. 18, 1946 until the time of his retirement on April 12, 1982.
He was a member of the Bemus Point United Methodist Church and Ellery Post 557, Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Always one who greatly loved his children and grandchildren, he was an avid gardener and fan of the Dallas Cowboys and New York Mets. He loved hunting and fishing and making Polish dill pickles, and was always especially proud of his military service.

Wife: the former Phyllis E. Anderson, whom he married OCt. 15, 1949 in Mayville

Daughters: Judy M. Ribbing, Joette A. Abbey, Jean J. Burns
Grandchildren: Kari J., Joseph J. II, Dane McT., Nicholas J., Jill M., Dawn C., Amber N., Corey J., and Nicole Urbanik, Kasey C. Van Marter, Timothy "Joey" Burns, and Bobbi E. and Lauren A. Ribbing
Two great grandchildren
Brother: Paul Urbanik
Sisters: Stella Braciszewski, Sophia Dobrzynski, Jackie Atkins
He was preceded in death by a son, Joseph A. Urbanik, who ided Feb. 23, 1983, and by his foster mother, Mary Wilson.
Rev. Daniel G. McBride will officiate at the service.
Burial will be in Bemus Point Cemetery.
