| | | Carl Joseph Schulz, 99, of Mediapolis, Iowa, died at 4:15 a.m. on Thursday, August 6, 2009, at Prairie Ridge Care & Rehab in Mediapolis, Iowa.
Carl lived all of his 99 years in Des Moines County, Iowa. As a young man he worked at Blaul Brothers Wholesale Grocer and the Drainage District pumping station. He commercial fished for many years, but his main vocation was farming. He spent many enjoyable hours on the Mississippi River hunting and fishing. He enjoyed his hobby of raising Canadian Geese.
Carl and Gladys Hillyard were married on October 12, 1938, in Danville, Iowa. In 1943, they moved to his childhood farm where they since resided.
He was an active member of First United Methodist Church for over 70 years. He was a board member of the Kingston Store for many years, as well as a director of the Farm Service Board.
Carl and Gladys were the parents of five children; two sons, John (Barbara) Schulz of Burlington and Paul (Rita) Schulz of Charlotte, North Carolina; three daughters, Jane (Ken) Ferguson of West Des Moines, Iowa, Diane (Rick) Pfadenhauer of Roland, Iowa, and Shirley Rath of Kalona, Iowa; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, one brother and two sisters.
The family will receive friends on Saturday evening from 5:30 until 7:30 p.m. in Prugh's Chapel in Burlington.
The funeral service for Mr. Schulz will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, August 9, 2009, at Grace United Methodist Church in Burlington. Burial will be held on Monday, August 10, 2009, at 10 a.m. in Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington.
