| | | Walter Lee Lippert, 84, of Burlington, Iowa, died at 3:45 a.m. on Tuesday, August 11, 2009, at Bickford Cottage, Burlington, Iowa.
He was born on October 2, 1924, in Burlington, Iowa, the son of William Frederick and Hattie Cynthia Trobee Lippert. He married Isabel Ann Thomas on August 27, 1950, in Burlington.
He worked for CB&Q and Burlington Northern Railroad for 33 years before retiring in 1985. He was a switchman before being promoted to yardmaster. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen and United Transportation Union.
He was in the Air Force and fought in the Western Pacific Theatre flying 40 bombing missions over enemy territory. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross for heroic measures. He enjoyed attending Air Force Crew reunions. He loved to sing and was in the church choir for many years. He was also a church deacon and active in the GEMS at First Presbyterian Church. He treasured the 58 years of marriage to his wife, Isabel.
He is survived by his wife, Isabel, of Burlington; two sons, Thomas Lee (Gayl) Lippert of St. Petersburg, Florida, and Charles Walter Lippert of Roeland Park, Kansas; three grandchildren, Eric and Kyle Johnson and Anna Clelland; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ruth Butler and Betty (Hartley) McPherson, both of Burlington; one brother, Donald Lippert of Burlington; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and four brothers.
Private interment with military rites by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard will be held at Aspen Grove Cemetery on Friday, August 14, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at First Presbyterian Church, Burlington, Iowa, at 2:00 p.m. following interment. Rev. Deb Miller-Kinney will officiate. Friends may call from 6:00 until 7:30 p.m. at Prugh’s Chapel on Thursday evening. A memorial has been established for First Presbyterian Church and Great River Hospice House.
