Robert James Carhoff, 65, of Sperry, died at 12:36 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 20. 2009, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born Jan. 17, 1944, in Burlington, he was the son of Robert Lee and Betty Jane Boyle Carhoff. On June 22, 1973, he married Marilyn McKeown in Burlington.

Mr. Carhoff worked as an engineer for the city of Burlington. He was a graduate of Danville High School and earned an engineering degree at University of Iowa. He was a member of the Army Honor Guard and served as a civil engineer in Germany from 1967 to 1969. He was of the Catholic faith. He was a member of Moose Lodge 579, Cotillion Club, Eastern Iowa Polka Club and American Public Works Association. He enjoyed dancing, gardening, woodworking and tending his livestock and orchard. He especially enjoyed spending time with his sons and grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Marilyn; three sons, Benjamin (Jenny) A. Carhoff of Coralville, Andrew (Tiffany) R. Carhoff of Mediapolis and Nathan (Michaela) E. Carhoff of Ankeny; four grandchildren, Liam, Emily, Dusty and Chloe; three brothers, William (Becky) Carhoff of Gastonia, N.C., John Carhoff of Cedar Rapids and James (Vickie) Carhoff of Burlington; three sisters, Rebecca (Greg) Smith of West Burlington, Naomi (Steve) Lipper of New London and Suellen (Brent) Schleisman of Mount Pleasant; several nieces and nephews; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday evening at Prugh’s Chapel in Burlington.

The graveside service with military rites for Mr. Carhoff will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in Old Stone Cemetery with the Fr. David Steinle officiating.

A memorial has been established In Memory of Robert Carhoff.
