Eileen Hanrahan Riffel, 96, of Burlington, died at 7:45 a.m. Monday, Oct. 5, 2009, at GRMC Klein Center in Burlington.

Born Oct. 26, 1912, in Burlington, she was the daughter of James and Anna Scheu Hanrahan. On Oct. 9, 1946, she married Joseph P. Riffel in West Burlington. He died Dec. 9, 1988.

Mrs. Riffel was a saleswoman at Schramm’s Department Store and a buyer
for Klein’s Department Store.

She was a member of SS. Mary and Patrick Catholic Church in West Burlington, the Altar and Rosary Society and Legion of Mary. She loved her church and her faith, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Chicago Bulls and spending time at Lake Poinsett, S.D. She always went to daily Mass, and she volunteered for Birthright.

Survivors include two daughters, Mary Jo (Tom) Fisher of Burlington and Teresa (Bill) Bence of West Burlington; one son, James W. (Teresa) Riffel of Burlington; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; great-nieces and great-nephews.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, four sisters, two brothers and three nieces.

A Rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. Thursday in Prugh’s Chapel. The
family will then receive friends until 8:30 p.m.

The Memorial Mass of Resurrection for Mrs. Riffel will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, October 9, 2009 at SS. Mary and Patrick Catholic Church with the Rev. David Steinle as celebrant. Music will be provided by Des Moines County Resurrection Choir. Burial will be at a later date in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for Birthright.
