| | | Raymond Eugene Wilke, 92, of Burlington died at Great River Hospice House, West Burlington, Iowa, on Thursday, October 15, 2009 at 3:55 p.m.
Born on December 18, 1916, in Burlington, Iowa, he was the son of Oscar Fredrick and Hattie Schultz Wilke. He married Leopoldine “Babe” Von Ende on June 20, 1941 in Burlington, Iowa. She died March 30, 2006.
Raymond served in the U.S. Navy. He served on the mine sweeper U.S.S. Threat and was a member of the Avenger Squadron. He owned and operated Wilke Confectionery on Central and Pine. The family sold the store in 1970. He then worked for the City of Burlington as the first housing inspector and the first and only building inspection supervisor. His busiest year was in 1977 when 946 permits were issued. He retired from the City of Burlington in 1983. He was avid fisherman and loved camping. He was a member of the Circle Square B Dance Club. He was affiliated with the First United Church of Christ.
He is survived by one daughter, Gloria (Bryan) Shipley of Burlington; one son, Dennis (Rosanne) Wilke of Urbandale, Iowa; three grandsons, Jason, Brenton and Kyle; two granddaughters, Rebecca and Rachael; two great-grandsons, Gabriel and Zachary; and two great-granddaughters, Chloe and Grace.
He was preceded in death by his wife and parents.
Funeral services for Raymond E. Wilke will be held on Monday, October 19, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at First United Church of Christ. Pastor JudyAnne Morse will officiate. Friends may call after 9 a.m. at the church with the family receiving friends one hour prior to the service on Monday. Military rites will be conducted by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard.
A memorial has been established for First United Church of Christ Roof Fund.
