| | | Eugene “Gene” Michael Riley, 79, of Burlington, died at 2:50 p.m. Saturday, October 31, 2009, at Great River Medical Center Hospice House in West Burlington.
Born April 17, 1930, in Burlington, he was the son of Harold Paul and Lucy Frances Whittemore Riley. On October 19, 1957, he married Mary Kay Verstegen in Little Chute, Wisconsin.
Mr. Riley was president of Big River Lumber Company. He earned a degree in commerce at University of Notre Dame. He served as a lieutenant in the Navy. He was a member of SS. John & Paul Catholic Church in Burlington. He was past president of Notre Dame School Board and a founding member of the Notre Dame Foundation. He served on the board of directors of US Bank and was president of Catholic Charities. He loved to duck hunt, play golf and he loved his family.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Kay ofBurlington; one daughter, Jane P. (Michael) O’Malley of Wilmette, Illinois; five sons, Timothy M.(Lynn) Riley of Woodstock, Georgia, Kevin P. (Stephanie) Riley of Pleasanton, California; Steven V. (Suzanne) Riley of Oakland, California; John P. (Andrea) Riley of Burlington, Iowa, and Thomas E.(Tammy) Riley of Longview, Texas; 12 grandchildren; and two sisters, Lucy Ringold of Des Moines, Iowa, and twin sister, Jane Pendry of Lawrence, Kansas.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
There will be a Christian Wake Service in Prugh’s Chapel at 6:00 p.m. Tuesday. Following, the family will receive friends until 8:30 p.m.
The Mass of Christian Burial for Mr. Riley will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Burlington with Fr. Patrick Hilgendorf
officiating. Music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Burlington.
