| | | Emily Louise Sander, 89, of Burlington died at Burlington Care Center on Tuesday, November 3, 2009 at 8:10 p.m.
Born on March 23, 1920, she was the daughter of Lawrence A. and Nellie G. Haag Vorwerk. She married Raymond F. Sander on May 5, 1953 in Burlington at St. John Catholic Church. He died on April 24, 1976.
Emily was a loving homemaker. She worked at the Glove Factory and loved taking care of children. She worked as a babysitter for many years. She worked for Father O’Hare in Dodgeville as a housekeeper and cooked for the priests and even the Bishop when he visited. She also worked at Klein’s ready wear in downtown Burlington, Van’s Lunch Box and McKesson & Robbins Drug Store as a bookkeeper. She belonged to a club for retired ladies and would go to different restaurants to eat and chat. She really enjoyed caring for her flower garden. She was affiliated with SS. John & Paul Catholic Church.
She is survived by two daughters, Donna Rae (Kevin) Wooldridge of Burlington and Joyce Elaine (Byron) Whittlesey of Burlington; one son, Richard Mark (Rick) Sander of Burlington; eight grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; two sisters, Irene Clark of Burlington and JoAnne Kurtz of Ft. Madison; and one brother, Brother Leo Anthony Vorwerk of Atkinson, KS.
She was preceded in death by her husband, one son, James Raymond Sander, four sisters and one brother.
A Mass of Christian Burial will he held on Saturday, November 7, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at St. John Catholic Church in Burlington, Iowa. Fr. Patrick Hilgendorf will officiate. Music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir.
A Christian Wake Service will be held at 6:00 p.m. at Prugh's Chapel on Friday evening. The family will receive friends thereafter until 8:30 p.m.
Memorials have been established Notre Dame Foundation and SS. John & Paul Catholic Church.
