PAUL D. SHEEHEY BURLINGTON — Paul Donovan Sheehey, 85, died Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2004, at his home in Burlington following a lengthy illness. He was born Jan. 31, 1919, in Essex Junction, the son of John W. and Vera (Hathaway) Sheehey. A graduate of Cathedral High School (1937), St. Michael's College (1941), and Boston College School of Law (1949), he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1941. He served in the weather squadron, assigned to various air stations in the United States and North Atlantic during World War II. After graduation from law school, Paul clerked for Pearley Feen, beginning a practice that would last more than 50 years. He was the senior partner in the firm of Sheehey Furlong & Behm, a member of the Vermont Bar since 1950, and a member of the Bar of the U.S. Supreme Court. He was a corporate attorney and longtime counsel for Green Mountain Power, Mount Mansfield Television Inc., and other area businesses. He also offered legal counsel and guidance to many individual clients. From 1975 to 1984, Paul served on the Attorneys Professional Conduct Board, a position to which he was appointed by the Vermont Supreme Court. Paul appreciated an occasional cigar and a well-stacked wood pile, possessed a love of airplanes, and was known for his dry sense of humor. With his wife, he completed the crossword puzzle every single day. In addition to practicing law, Paul was an accomplished cartoonist, watercolor artist, builder of stone walls and flyer of kites. In short, we believe he was “the brightest man under the sun.” Paul married Elizabeth Leary on May 6, 1946. They made their home in Burlington and together raised their 11 children, who recall falling asleep to his piano playing. He leaves his wife of 58 years, Elizabeth; two sisters, Joan (and husband Edward Pfeifer) and Joyce (and husband Robert Stanton); his 11 children and their spouses, Mary and Gary Ackel, John and Linda Sheehey, James and JoAnn Sheehey, Margaret and Larry Hendee, Martha Sheehey, Maura and Michael Morse, Joel and Shari Sheehey, Johanna and Bruce Jones, Miriam and Edward Stone, Joyce Sheehey, and Jean Sheehey. He leaves his 20 grandchildren, Paula, Gregory, Timothy, Matthew, Caitlin, Simon, Andrew, Meg, John, Martin, Ellen, Nathan, Benjamin, Joseph, William, Luke, Christine, Karen, Annie and Abel; he also leaves five greatgrandchildren, Libby, Thomas, Jacob, Xavier and Myiah; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and one brother, the Rev. Robert Sheehey, S.S.E. The family would like to gratefully acknowledge the help of the transfusion nurses at FAHC, Doctors Jamie O'Brien, Neil Hyman and Frank Landry, and the ministry of Father Thomas Ball. Visiting hours will be Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the Ready Funeral Home, South Chapel, 261 Shelburne Road, Burlington. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 23, in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, where Paul was a faithful member. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Red Cross, 29 Mansfield Ave., Burlington, or to the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 20 Pine St., Burlington.
