| | | Heidi (Miller) Millarker of Tallahassee, Florida, beloved daughter of Frank and Linda Miller, passed away unexpectedly on July 21, 2008. She was born on June 14, 1984 in Burlington, Vt. and grew up in Jericho, Vt. Heidi was elected to the National Honor Society and graduated in the top 10 of her class from Mt. Mansfield Union High School in 2002. She graduated cum laude from Ithaca College in 2005 with a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and a minor in music. Prior to her death, Heidi was studying for her Ph.D. at Florida State University. In addition to her studies, she was working to promote the advancement of women in philosophy. In June, 2006, she married Dennis Starker. In true Heidi fashion, they combined last names to create a new name. Hence the name Millarker.
Heidi was a very special person who will be missed by all those who knew and loved her. Her smile was infectious; her laugh unmistakable; her achievements and talents many and varied. In addition to excelling academically, Heidi was a great musician. Her love of music and the clarinet was always an important piece of her life. A gifted clarinetist, she was chosen to participate in numerous All State and All New England Music Festivals and was selected to attend the Kennedy Center/National Symphony Orchestra Summer Music Institute in Washington, D.C. in 2000. Heidi was a member of the MMU junior varsity softball team for two years and the MMU field hockey team for all four years of high school. She was selected as a member of the National Academic Squad by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association in 2001. As with everything she did in life, Heidi gave her all, strove to excel and made positive contributions both on and off the field. Her other interests included dance, ice skating, yoga and arts and crafts.
In addition to her parents, Heidi is survived by her husband, Dennis Millarker of Tallahassee, Fl.; brothers Nathaniel Miller of Jericho, Vt. and Eric Miller of Grantham, NH; grandparents Eugene and Margaret Nickerson of Springfield, Vt. and Iris Miller of Rutland, Vt. as well as several aunts, uncles and cousins. In addition, she leaves her best friend, Jacqui Dec of San Francisco, CA. Heidi was predeceased by her grandfather, Francis Miller, Jr. in 2003.
A celebration of Heidi’s life will be held at Ready Mountain View Chapel, 68 Pinecrest Drive, Essex Junction on Friday, August 1st, 2008. Calling hours are 1-3 p.m., with a service immediately following at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Heidi’s memory may be made to the National Alliance for Mental Illness, P.O. Box 759155, Baltimore, MD 21275-9155 or online at NAMI.org.
