Grace G. Hill died peacefully at home in the presence of family, on Thursday, July 24, 2008.
She was born on May 23, 1919 in New York, New York, daughter of Mary (Failla) and Vincent Giarratano. She graduated with a B.A. from Hunter College of the City University of New York, and received M.Ed. and M.S. degrees from the University of Vermont.

Wife of Justice William C. Hill, she was widowed in 1998. She and her husband were devoted in their marriage of 56 years. They moved to Vermont in 1946. She became a dedicated teacher, teaching at Hinesburg High School, in the Shelburne school system, and at Champlain Valley Union High School until retirement.

She was a lifetime member of the American Association of University Women, a trustee of the Rock Point School, a member of the Klifa Club of Burlington, and a member of the Vermont Italian Cultural Association. Always an avid naturalist, she was a certified Master Gardener, and a beekeeper and an officer of the Vermont Beekeepers' Association. She was also active in politics at a time of significant political change in the State. In 1964, she was a member of the Vermont delegation at the Republican National Convention and a key supporter of Senator Margaret Chase Smith's nomination for President. In the years that followed she became a staunch Democrat.

Throughout most of her life, she and her husband were members of St. Paul's Cathedral in Burlington. In later years they attended All Saints Church in South Burlington. After the death of her husband she joined the parish of St. Catherine of Siena in Shelburne.

She is survived by her daughters Toni of Shelburne, Vermont; Pam of Concord, Massachusetts; and Elizabeth of Lexington, Massachusetts; by her sisters, Josephine Giarratano of New York, New York and Constance Alongi of Monroe Township, New Jersey; by her brother Frank Giarratano of Hamilton Township, New Jersey; by five grandchildren; and by many nieces and nephews.

Visitors are invited to join the family on Saturday, August 2 during viewing hours from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Ready Funeral Service, Inc., 261 Shelburne Road, Burlington. The date for a memorial mass will be announced shortly.
