John L. Hawkes

John L. Hawkes, 94, of Shelburne,VT (formerly of Dorset,VT) passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 27, 2008 at Wake Robin Retirement Community.

He was predeceased by his wife Winifred.

He was born in New York City, NY on February 8, 1914 the son of R. Forbes Hawkes M.D. and Alice Belknap Hawkes.

John graduated from Avon Old Farms and Cornell University. He also did graduate work at Columbia University. He then ran his dairy farm in Easton, Maryland which he loved doing. He served in the US Navy during World War II and then continued his interest in Dairy Co-Operatives by joining the Manchester Cooperative under I.N. Bartlett. In 1950 he married Winifred R. Farrell.

John and Wini then went to France to research the quality control of milk from the farm to the consumer.

After 13 years in South Miami, Florida he returned to Vermont. He served as a Trustee for the Dorset Village Public Library and for the Southern Vermont Art Center. It was there that he and his wife Wini ran summer and winter film festivals for nine years. Films were a passion and they had run a film festival in Miami Florida as well as in Dorset. He served on the Water Board locating the early records of the company and oversaw a complete remapping of the entire system. John served on the Prudential Committee and was the first to initiate and oversee the change of lighting on the Village Green. John was always ready to help his neighbors in Dorset where he supported so many good causes, especially the Dorset Theatre Festival.

He was a member of the Corn Exchange, the Society of the Cincinnati and St. Georges Society.

John is survived by his sons Lars Hawkes and his wife Sigrid of Powell River, BC, Canada, Peter Hawkes of Dunlap, CA, and Martin Hawkes and his wife Karin of Monkton, VT; and his grandchildren; Jessica, Ian and his wife Jocelyn.

No public services are planned.
