| | | Mr. Paul Maurice Dumais, age 77 years, passed away August 13, 2008, at the Vermont Respite House in Williston following a long and courageous battle with Lung Cancer.
He was born June 9, 1931, in Middletown, CT, son of the late Omer and Angeline (Robillard) Dumais. Paul grew up in New Britain, Connecticut. He attended St. Mary’s Parochial School and New Britain High School, graduating in 1950. He went on to attend St. Michael’s College, where he majored in Sociology and distinguished himself as a boxer in the Golden Gloves. His 1954 class was the first ROTC class to graduate from St. Mike’s. Paul later returned to school, receiving his Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Vermont in 1974.
Paul served as an officer in the United States Air Force and was honorably discharged in 1961, having attained the rank of 1st Lieutenant. Paul then worked in a variety of occupations, including Metropolitan Life Insurance agent, social worker for the Vermont Department of Social Work, Vocation Rehabilitation counselor for the Vermont Department of Education, manpower coordinator for Winooski Model Cities, mail handler and union steward for the United States Postal Service (Colchester) and medic and psychologist in the Vermont Army National Guard, retiring in August 1987.
Paul’s outside interests were many. As a member of the Vermont French-Canadian Genealogical Society, Paul worked as a genealogist, as well as researched the family trees of friends, neighbors and family members. Paul was an avid collector of arrowheads, active member of the Sherlock Holmes Club, participant in the Senior Olympics, where he distinguished himself with gold, silver and bronze medals, president of the Committee On the Underground Railroad, which won him a National Diversity Award from the United States Postal Service, member of the Elk’s Lodge #916 in Burlington and lector and usher at St. John Vianney Church.
Paul married the former Lorraine Brean at St. Jude’s Church in Hinesburg on June 12, 1954. After the couple’s military travels to San Antonio, Texas, Joplin, Missouri and Anchorage, Alaska, they settled in their home in South Burlington in June 1961, where they lived together for 47 years.
Paul is predeceased by his parents and his brothers Robert Marcel Dumais and Donald Omer Dumais. In addition to his wife, Lorraine of South Burlington, he leaves his daughter Valerie and Alfred Robert of Plattsmouth, Nebraska, son Matthew and Deborah Dumais of Fort Drum, New York, sisters Diane and Joe Malena of Forrestville, Connecticut and Lillian and Joe LaCombe of New Britain, Connecticut, grandchildren, Jeremy and Anya Robert of Plattsmouth, Nebraska and Adam and Tonya Robert of Bellevue, Nebraska, great-grandchildren, William, Tyler and Alexis Robert, step-grandchildren Dennis, Jude and Mandy, three step-great-grandchildren, brother-in-laws Richard and Laura Brean of Grand Isle, Robert and Leitha Brean, of Colchester, Donald and Judy Brean of Hinesburg, sister-in-law Lucille and Jim Hayford of Burlington, and many nieces and nephews.
Paul’s family would like to give special thanks to all the nurses and staff of the VNA, Hospice and VT Respite House for all their care and support.
A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, August 16, 2008 at 11 a.m. at St. John Vianney Church with private burial in Resurrection Park. Memorial Contributions may be made to the Vermont Respite House, 99 Allen Brook Lane, Williston. Visiting hours will be held on Friday from to 5 – 8 p.m. with an Elk’s Service at 7:00pm at the Ready Funeral and Cremation Service, South Chapel, 261 Shelburne Rd., Burlington.
