Gwendolyn Cheney Mitchell of South Burlington passed away unexpectedly but peacefully with family by her side on August 25, 2008 at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington.

Gwendolyn May Cheney was born on November 15, 1929 to the late Julia (Somers) and Bunal Cheney in Barnet, Vermont.

She was married to Everett A. Mitchell, Jr. on May 12, 1948 who predeceased her on December 12, 2006. They had resided on Patrick Street since 1959 where they raised their five children.

Gwen worked at Sears & Roebuck, Grants Department Store and the Burlington Credit Bureau. She was a member of The First Church of Christ, Scientist in Boston, Massachusetts and Burlington, Vermont. She was a reader at the Christian Science Church in Burlington and a librarian at the Christian Science Reading Room in Burlington.

She lived the random acts of kindness everyday through her loving and sometimes unique notes and gifts she sent to loved ones. She was a true humanitarian. Grateful for everything and everyone she knew. She loved her family unconditionally. She blessed our lives, God Bless you Mom, we love you forever.

She is survived by her sisters; Dot and her husband Russ Therrien of Cabot, Ruby Humphrey of Waterford, Elsie Wright of Bradford and Olive Cheney of Peacham, brothers; Lyle and his wife Jackie Cheney of Center Tuftonboro, New Hampshire and Robert and his wife Mary of Laguna Woods of California and sister-in-law Winona and her husband Wayne Dennison of Ellsworth, Maine. She was predeceased by her sister Merle in 1984.

Her children; daughter Deborah and her husband Doug Grout of East Calais and her four sons; Gary and his wife Annette Mitchell of Arizona, David and his wife Darlene Mitchell of Colchester, Greg and his wife Kate Mitchell of Essex and Mark and his wife Dencie Mitchell of South Burlington, nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Her furry feline companion Bon chat.

Donations may be sent to the Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf at 228 North Winooski Avenue, Burlington, VT 05401.
