| | | Andrea May (Mongeon) Martelli embarked on her spiritual journey Thursday, Sept. 25, 2008, surrounded by her loved ones.
The youngest of six, Andi was born in York, Maine, on April 23, 1962, to Andrew and Annette (Legace) Mongeon. As a child, she was a fun loving tomboy who blossomed into a high school heart crusher. Throughout her college years, she pursued her passion for geology through the University of Maryland in Munich, Germany. When Germany united, Andi was invited to attend the first exploratory dig in Czechoslovakia after removal of the Berlin wall. She also participated in aerial studies during, and following, the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in Italy. In casual conversation, it was easy to see that her adventures throughout Europe gave her a strong appreciation for international culture.
Andi returned to the United States to study theater at the University of Maryland. Her exposure to various countries and eastern cultures sparked her creativity in performing arts. She soon built a reputation as a talented actress and seamstress in the theater department. Not only did Andi have a gift for stage lighting and design but she also was selected to perform in many Shakespeare productions. After years of academics, Andi went on to work for NASA mapping satellite images of the moon and eventually found her niche caring for patients as a dental assistant.
Out side of work, she was a Jeopardy Queen who always knew the answer, but never phrased it in the form of a question. Andi loved her mother earth, fought courageously to protect it, and left her footprint by sharing her love for landscaping. Who knew that a woman barely five feet tall could independently heft railroad ties and wrestle trees into the back of her Saturn Wagon for her latest outdoor project? Gifted with impeccable taste, she loved to be anyone's personal shopper and always knew how to get the latest style on sale. Did we mention she had a parking Goddess? She always got a front row spot.
Andrea's most beautiful day on this earth was her wedding day, Sept. 12, 2008, where she was united with the love of her life, Rick Martelli at the Holy Cross Catholic Church in Colchester.
Andi left a legacy to her friends and family as she knew she was going to return to her maker. She is survived by her husband Rick, parents Andrew and Annette Monegon, brothers Scott, Roch and Bruce, sisters Robin and Karen, and she was the annoyingly favorite aunt of eleven nieces and five nephews. Added to the list, is her loving dog (Harley) and independent cat (Miss Kit).
Calling hours for our beloved Andrea will be Sunday, Sept. 28, from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Ready South Chapel on Shelburne Road. A Mass will be held Monday, Sept. 29, at 11:30 a.m. at the Holy Cross Catholic Church, Church Road, Colchester.
