William Abraham, 91, of Bittersweet Village, formerly of East Charlotte, passed away Monday, Sept. 29, 2008, at the Fletcher Allen Hospital in Burlington. He was born on June 21, 1917, in Boston, Mass., the son of the late Bernard and Mary (Hurley) Abraham. A graduate of English High School, he served during World War II in the U.S. Navy.

Following the war, Mr. Abraham attended Boston University and went to work for Sears, Roebuck, managing stores in Woburn and Quincy, Mass. He became national zone manager for Sears, Roebuck of Mexico during the fifties and sixties, and later headed stores in New York state and South Burlington.

In retirement, he worked to establish group homes for developmentally disabled adults in the Burlington area, collaborating with Howard Mental Health and Sister Janice Ryan of Trinity College.

Mr. Abraham was married for 63 years to Eleanore (Healy) who survives him, along with their seven children, Robert of Honolulu, Hawaii and his partner Karen Lee, Nancy Hall of Medfield, Mass., and her husband Raymond Starr, Ellen of Williston and her husband Dan Chave, Jane of South Burlington, Sally and her husband Michael Hertz of Norwell, Mass., Patty of Novato, Calif., and Maryann of Essex Junction. Also survived by his grandchildren Jeff Hall, Jeremy Hertz, Meredith Hall and Alex Hertz. Mr. Abraham was predeceased by his sister, Mary Elizabeth, and his brothers, Thomas and John.

A Funeral Mass will be offered at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 2, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Williston with interment to follow in Resurrection Park Cemetery in South Burlington. Contributions in William's memory may be made to Howard Center, 102 South Winooski Avenue, Burlington, Vermont 05401.
