| | | Nicholas J. Principe, Sr., 94, resident of Harbor View Apartments in South Burlington, died peacefully on October 20, at the home of his family.
He was born in Bridgeport, CT on Aug. 3, 1914, the third of six children of Angelo and Lucy Principe.
He attended schools in CT, in both public and private schools. His formal education was interrupted when he was called to serve in the U.S. Army during WWII.
In 1941, he married Margaret M. Supek of Proctor, VT. Following his active service he settled in Proctor and raised 2 children, Nick Jr. and Candy.
Having spent five years in Army Bands during WWII, he was asked to join the Vermont National Guard to organize the 40th Army Band of the Army National Guard while a full time employee of the unit. He thus continued his military service in the Vermont National Guard from 1947 to 1976 retiring as CW4 Bandmaster of the 40th Army Band of VT ARNG. His awards included Army Meritorious Service medal, National Commendation, American Defense, WWII Victory and the Armed Forces Reserve medals. Following his Army Service and his love for boating, he joined the Burlington Coast Guard Auxiliary in 1979. He attended 2 National Vessel Examination schools in Norfolk, VA and Great Lakes, IL. Upon completion of the courses, he continued to serve the CG Auxiliary as a Vessel Examiner from 1979 to 1999. He attained the rank of Commander of Flotilla 15-02 and retired after 20 yrs of service.
He was a member of the American Legion, Assoc of U.S. Army, the Reserve Officers Assoc and USCG VT.
As an avid outdoor person, he enjoyed most of the sports that Vermont provided, namely hunting, ice fishing, boating, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.
He was predeceased by his parents, his devoted wife, Margaret of 52 years, 3 sisters, Jennie, Phyliss, and Mary. He is survived by his son, Nicholas Principe, Jr. and spouse, Ching of Weston, CT, Candy and her spouse, Tom Battey of Colchester, VT, his brother Alfonso Principe and spouse, Jean of Carlsbad, CA, sister, Rose Januska of Fairfield, CT, 4 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be Friday, Oct. 24, from 3:00 to 5:00pm at the Ready Funeral & Cremation Service South Chapel, 261 Shelburne Rd, Burlington. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, Oct. 25, at 11:00am in St. Catherine of Siena Church, Shelburne. Interment will follow in the Shelburne Village Cemetery family plot.
