  VIEW/SEND CONDOLENCES

Raymond R. Charbonneau, Sr., 70 of Essex Center, died peacefully Wednesday, November 5, 2008 at his home surrounded by his loving family following a courageous battle with leukemia.

He was born in Burlington on Oct. 21, 1938, the son of Edmund and Harriet (DeForge) Charbonneau. He was a graduate of Essex High School, class of 1957.

On Dec. 2, 1961, he married his high school sweetheart Gloria Lucia in Holy Family Church. He served in the VT Air Nation Guard for eight years. He was the founder and president of Cedar Ridge Sprinkler Co. from 1977 until he retired in 2004. After his retirement, he could still often be found (down at the shop) offering his advice.

Ray lived life to the fullest. He had many, many friends. Anywhere he went you could count on him running into someone he knew and stopping to chat. Oftentimes he would stop and chat with people even if he didn’t know them, and the next time he ran into them he would greet them like an old friend.

Ray thoroughly enjoyed spending time with his family. They were his pride and joy. He loved to go fishing, hunting, boating, spending time at his camp in Island Pond, and traveling with his wife Gloria. When not traveling, he could be found watching his grandsons sporting events, just as he had enjoyed going to his son and daughters games when they were younger.

Ray enjoyed baseball and softball. He played in the men’s softball league for many years. He was a Red Sox fan his whole life and had the opportunity to go to Fenway Park this past spring to enjoy a game.

Ray was an avid bowler. His many bowling accomplishments include three perfect games, one 299 game, and two 298 games. He was inducted into the Vermont Bowlers Hall of Fame in 2001.

Ray was also an accomplished horseshoe pitcher. He and his wife enjoyed the many years that they were involved with the Milton Horseshoe Club. Ray was inducted into the Vermont Hall of Fame for Horseshoes in 1999 and into the New England Hall of Fame in 2006.

He will be greatly missed by everyone whose life he touched.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Gloria of Essex Center; three children, Tammy Charbonneau and her partner, Barb Puls of Essex Jct., Raymond R. Jr. and his wife, Kimberly, and their children, Stephen and Kyle, of Essex, and Pam Putzier and her husband, Chris, and their children, Taylor Lovely and Michael Putzier, of Essex Jct.; his brothers and sister, Edward and Helen Charbonneau of Colchester, Viola and Pat Desso of Burlington, and Norm and Nancy Charbonneau of Essex Jct.; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and a brother, Elmer and two sisters, Josephine and Joyce.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, Nov. 8 at 10:00 AM in ST. Lawrence Roman Catholic Church, West Street, Essex Jct. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to either the American Cancer Society or VNA Hospice. Visiting hours will be held on Friday from 3-7:00pm in the Ready Funeral and Cremation Service, Mountain View Chapel, 68 Pinecrest Drive, Essex Jct.
