| | | Roderick Munro Tarte, 77, passed away at his home on Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2008 following a short battle with cancer. Rod was born in North Adams, Massachusetts on Dec. 28, 1930; the only child of the late Dolores H. and Isabel (Barber) Tarte. He graduated from Drury High School in North Adams, and attended RPI and the University of Vermont. He married Jean M. Horst on July 6, 1957 in Bennington, Vermont.
During his lifetime, he served his country as a soldier in the U.S. Army and as a pilot in the U.S. Air Force/Vermont Air National Guard.
Upon moving his family to Burlington in 1959, Rod was most notably employed by the New England Telephone Company where he retired in 1988 after 22 years of service. Rod loved life and had many hobbies. In particular, he loved planes, he loved the water and boating, and he was an avid toy train collector. Throughout his life, Rod participated in many organizations including the Boy Scouts of America, where he was an Eagle Scout; the National Ski Patrol (he retired from Bolton Valley where he served as patrol leader); the Volunteer Fire Department; the Power Squadron; and the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary where he served as Flotilla Commander and Crew Member.
Rod was much loved by his family. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Jean, and his children: Jennifer and her husband Ryan Williams; Jill and her husband Rick Karle and children Noah and Mia; Jeff and his wife Paula and children Clara and Anna; Johna and her husband Bob Mattiace and children Michael and Alivia; and Jerri and her husband Rick Guest and children David and Nick.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 8, 2008 at the Ready Funeral Chapel, 261 Shelburne Road, Burlington with visiting hours starting at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Rod's memory to the American Cancer Society, PO Box 1460, Williston, VT 05495-1460.
