John P. Van Sleet, Sr., 90, died on Sunday, November 30, 2008 at Birchwood Terrace Healthcare Alzheimer’s Unit.

He was born in Burlington, VT on January 18, 1918 the son of the late William Van Sleet, Sr. and Bessie (Cosgrove). On April 27, 1946 he was married to Doris Norton in Burlington. She predeceased him on February 20, 2001. John was a veteran of World War II having served with the US Army Air Corps stationed in England as a part of the 323rd Bomb Squadron. He retired from General Electric after many years of employment. John was also very involved with the Boy Scouts of America as an assistant leader for Troop 8.

John is survived by his son John P. Van Sleet, Jr. of Milton, his daughter Diane Barber and her husband Alton of Hinesburg; his grandchildren Nancy Rochefort and her husband Scott of Milton, Paul Van Sleet of Milton, Jessica Stolz and her husband Phillip of Hinesburg, and Katie Barber of Hinesburg; five great-grandchildren; very special family members John and Dot Kochan and their family of Albany, NY, and by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother William Van Sleet, Jr.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the nursing staff and LNA’s at Birchwood Terrace and Dr. John Reynolds for their compassion and care given to John during his illness.

Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, December 3, 2008 from 5:00 to 7:00pm at the Ready Funeral & Cremation Service South Chapel, 261 Shelburne Rd., Burlington. A graveside service will be private and at the convenience of the family in Lakeview Cemetery.
