DORIS J. “JEAN” LAUX, age 67, of Alston passed away Sunday, September 22, 2013 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital, L’Anse. She was born in L’Anse on August 24, 1946 the daughter of the late Alfred and Dorothy (Sullivan) Cayanus. Jean attended school in Baraga. On June 28, 1968 she married Rudolph J. “Rudy” Laux at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Baraga. He preceded her in death on August 1, 2012. Jean enjoyed polka music, being with her grandkids, and her husband, cooking, and baking homemade breads, cinnamon rolls, and pasties, and riding her “buggy”. She enjoyed hanging out with her special nephew David Gourneau, and her aunts Bernice and June. Jean loved her frogs.


Jean is survived by her loving children Michael (Shelly) Laux of Pekin, IL, Tilly (Vern) Smith of Stanwood, MI, Tina (Jim) Parkila of Pelkie, Trudy (Roy) Duquette of Baraga, Rodney Laux of Alston, Tammy (Jason) Mantila of Pelkie, and Teresa (Jason) Toogood of Rodney, MI, 16 grandchildren Samantha, Sabrina, and Alex Laux, Trevor and Chelsea Daly, Cooper Parkila, Josh and James Smith, Michael, and Rian Turunen, and Adam Duquette, Butter Laux, Craig and Johnathan “PeeWee” Mantila, and Nora and Isaac Toogood, brothers Roy (Jeanne) Gourneau of L’Anse, Frank (Jeanne) Gourneau of Twin Lakes, MI, Max Gourneau of Mass City, Jim (Pauline) Cayanus of Nisula, and Pete (Linda) Cayanus of Iron Mountain, and sister Lindy (Lloyd) Kunick of Nisula. Her two birds “Pete” and “PP” and her companion dog “Bones” also survive. She was preceded in death by her husband, and her brothers Alfred, and Charlie.


Funeral services for Jean were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, September 25, 2013 at the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L’Anse with Deacon John Cadeau officiating. The family greeted friends at the funeral chapel on Wednesday from 1 p.m. until the time of the service. Interment took place in the Alston Cemetery immediately following the funeral service and a luncheon was held at the Alston Town Hall.
