| | | Funeral services for Dick Strickland, age 69, of Villisca, Iowa, who entered into rest Tuesday, October 27, 2009 at Montgomery County Memorial Hospital, Red Oak, Iowa will be held Friday, October 30, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church, Villisca, Iowa with Reverend Gordon Scott officiating. Visitation with the family will be held 5-7 p.m., Thursday, October 29 at the Methodist Church, Villisca. Burial with military rites by the American Legion Ker-A-Vor Post 251 will be in the Villisca Cemetery, Villisca, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to the Villisca Fire Department or to the American Legion Ker-A-Vor Post 251. Dickie Lloyd Strickland was born November 20, 1939, in Page County, Iowa, the son of Lloyd Everett Strickland and Helen Celealia (Lundstedt) Strickland. He was born at the family farm and lived there four years and then the family moved to Montgomery County where he began school. He attended eight years of country school and graduated from Stanton High School in 1957. Dick played football and baseball in high school. He enlisted in the United States Army Reserves in 1956 and received an honorable discharge in 1964. In 1963, he was married to Dorothy Johnson and they later divorced. In 1985, he was united in marriage to Joann Pritchard.
Dick worked at Eveready Battery Company, Red Oak, Iowa for thirty five years. Following his retirement, he drove a school bus for Villisca Schools for thirteen years. Dick was a member of the Villisca Fire Department for thirty four years and chief for one year and a member of the American Legion Post 251 for thirty five years and commander five of those years. He enjoyed going to Nodaway on Saturday night and attending the stock car races in Corning. Dick was a huge Chicago Bears fan. He followed the girl’s volleyball, boys and girls basketball and the Villisca High School football. Dick and Joann enjoyed vacations in the black hills of South Dakota.
Preceding Dick in death were his parents, Lloyd and Helen Strickland; wife, Joann Strickland; brother, Fred Strickland.
Survivors include daughter, Debbie Strickland Schenck of Villisca, Iowa; stepdaughters, Jeanne Pritchard and special friend Calvin Davis of Omaha, Nebraska, Pam Tucker and husband Adam of Hurst, Texas and Nancy Bond and husband Donnie of Red Oak, Iowa; grandson, Cody Clement of Villisca, Iowa; step grandchildren, Adam Smith and wife Abbey of Red Oak, Iowa, Caleb Smith of Atlantic, Iowa, Lucas and Sean Tucker of Hurst, Texas and great grandchildren Aiden and Aspen Smith of Red Oak, Iowa; brother, Lee Strickland and wife LaVern of Stanton, Iowa; nieces, nephews and many friends.
Dick will be missed by his family and friends
but his love and inspiration will live on through his family.
May God grant comfort and strength to those who mourn his passing.
